A sedition case has been filed in connection with the controversial statement of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson’s advisor Mizanur Rahman Minu at the divisional public meeting in Rajshahi. On Tuesday (March 9th), Advocate Musabbirul Islam, the Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League’s (AL) secretary for legal affairs became the plaintiff and sought permission from the district magistrate for the case.
Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, organizing secretary of BNP, Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul and Shafiqul Haque Milon, Rajshahi metropolitan BNP president and secretary general respectively have been accused in the case along with Mizanur Rahman Minu.
In the petition, the plaintiff claimed, “The accused have committed the crime of treason by publicly declaring and threatening to overthrow the elected government, including the assassination of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, by organizing a pre-planned divisional public meeting in collaboration with each other. The accused have committed dangerous and threatening crimes against the security and sovereignty of Bangladesh through their speeches and activities. ” On this argument, the plaintiff filed an application against the four BNP leaders under Section 123 (a) / 124 (a) / 34 of the Penal Code.
The plaintiff was accompanied by Dablu Sarkar, secretary general of Rajshahi metropolitan AL and Mir Ishtiaq Limon, organizing secretary of Rajshahi metropolitan AL along with several party leaders and lawyers, when the sedition case was filed with the district magistrate on Tuesday (March 9th) morning.
Advocate Musabbirul Islam said, “The case requires the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) after investigation. That is why an application has been made to the district magistrate. Once approved by the MoHA, regular cases will be filed against the four BNP leaders. ”
Witnesses in the petition are Dablu Sarkar, Vir Muktijoddha Nowsher Ali, Ahsanul Haque Pintu, Asaduzzaman Azad and Abdul Momin. All of them are AL leaders.
Dablu Sarkar said, “The kind of statement made by the BNP leaders in the name of divisional public meeting on March 2 is not a political statement. Rhetorically a reflection of the conspiracy. That is why we as a party are not taking the matter lightly. ”
The petition said, “Mizanur Rahman Minu, the advisor to the BNP chairperson, publicly threatened the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government with the nefarious intention of creating hatred and overthrowing the elected government from the Rajshahi BNP’s divisional public meeting on March 2. At that time, he said, ‘Hasina, let be ready – this evening time – tomorrow morning may not be come for you. Can you remember the 1975? ( On August 15th of 1975, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated along with his family).”
“After the announcement, extremism spread among the BNP leaders and workers. Some of the BNP leaders and activists broadcast live on Facebook. BNP central leader Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu and other accused who were present on the stage created hatred by giving similar statements. He visited the threat of overthrowing the elected government led by Sheikh Hasina through illegal conspiracies”, the petition added.
Mizanur Rahman Minu’s speech at the BNP’s divisional public meeting in Rajshahi on March 2nd was widely criticized. He later expressed regret and in a statement called for “not looking for conspiracies” but the Awami League was not satisfied.
